The One That Got Away by Katy Perry

Florence and the Machine

Whether it's the snotty kid in Kindergarten who tied your pig tails together and pushed you in the mud; or the teacher who gave you a gold star for your homework; or the Hollywood celebrity whose posters were pinned up on your wall; or the musician who rode a motorbike by night and wrote you love songs by day - your first love is the one you'll never forget, even if they did get away.

In the case of Katy Perry, the first love that got away might just bring home a record-breaking feat for the California Gurl of Pop.

Perry who has already had each of her five singles from Teenage Dream reach number 1, has tied the Michael Jackson record for five number 1 hits from a single album.  Her newest release, is a mid-tempo song, about her first love, called The One That Got Away, and if it reaches number 1, the song will beat the phenomneal feat that the King of Pop achieved with his album, Bad.

The lyrics of Perry's new song seem to suggest that Perry's first love was a blues musician who drove a Mustang and liked Radiohead.  Could it be Travie McCoy?  But McCoy rides a skateboard (jokes) ...oh ok so he is occassionally seen on MTV in a BMW 7 Series F-10 when hanging with Taio Cruz, but we know he doesn't sing the blues.  Between dreaming about being a billionaire and being young with clean teeth (note We're Alright), he doesnt seem to ever have the blues.

The truth is, most of the world has forgotten that Perry even dated McCoy.  The One That Got Aways may not be about McCoy and is  one of the few songs on her Teenage Dream album that isn't about Russel Brand, but the song is still good.  It may not have the anthemic chorus of Teenage Dream, the star power of California Gurls, witty lyrics of Last Friday Night, inspirational energy of Firework or production brilliance of E.T. but it is a song that is good enough in its own simplicity.

Good enough to not lett it's strangely forceful kid's play drum beat that clings like a flapping shoe sole distract you; good enough to dispense a daydream on a first love; good enough to let radio take 3 minutes of your day with.

On choosing the song as her sixth single, Perry explained: "I'm so pleased to select 'The One That Got Away' as my sixth single because this song shows a very different side of me that I haven't shown with my past singles on this record."

But will this sixth single be good enough to reach number 1?  On first listen, it's hard to see what this song offers that makes it just as special, if not more, than the ones that came before it.  It just might be that this one might get away from number 1 much like that elusive first love.
