Her largest audience may have been 2000 people and she may have breezed through three bands in the span of a few years, as she went from tossing drinks at a bar to tossing sticks for drum rolls, but Frankie Rose’s potential and talent has never been in question.
Former bartender turned musician, Frankie Rose released her debut single for the year, taken off her debut upcoming solo album, Interstellar. The song entitled Know Me, has been hailed by critics as one of the best releases of the year so far.
Rose was formerly in a series of Indie-pop bands, before she pursued a solo career since late last year. Rose started her music career as a drummer in the band Vivian Girls and the acclaimed garage-rock band, the Cristal Stilts. The musician has also sung for the 60s-style all girl pop collaboration Dum Dum Girls, but began to take charge of the musical direction and sound of a band when she formed Frankie Rose and the Outs.
Her pursuits as a drummer were not planned as explained by Rose in an interview, ‘Well, in my first band no one except the guitar player really knew how to play anything so I just sat down behind the kit and it was decided that I would be the drummer. Still don’t really know how to play actually.’
It turns out however, that her self-taught drumming skills now have an influence on her songwriting, I think drumming has made me a much better songwriter. I think you get a sense of timing for things you wouldn’t necessarily get otherwise.’
Rose’s reverb-enhanced vocal style has been compared to the likes of the Cardigans, but on her song ‘Know Me’ she uses a strong 80s vibe, with heavy electronic keyboard accompaniments. The song ‘Night Swim’, with more guitar theatrics, also follows the 1980s trail blaze but has a stronger 90s electronica influence.
