Air Guitar Corner: Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones

E-mail Print PDF

Air Guitar corner

This 1966 hit from The Rolling Stones is one of the few anthemic songs from the band that features guitar contributions from Brian Jones.

Jones died in.....and was one of the founding, although less famous, members of the band.  Jones is reported to have contributed to the iconic sitar riff on Paint It Black.

It is also one of the few songs that should be credited Nanker/Phelge but was instead credited to Jagger and Richards, according to original bassist for the band, Bill Wyman.

Nanker/Phelge refers to a term coined by Brian Jones to mean the entire band would share credits - Phelge is the last name of flatmate Jimmy Phelge and Nanker refers to the revolting face that bandmembers, especially Jones, would pull.  The song therefore, is a collaborative effort of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Bill Wyman, Brian Jones and drummer Charlie Watts - in other words, a Nanker/Phelge.

Other hits that were credited to Nanker/Phelge was Play With Fire, which was released in February 1965.  Paint it Black, however, is taken off the Stones' album Aftermath, which ironically is marketed as the first full length album from the Stones that features only Jagger/Richards compositions.

On the album, Jones experiments with a number of instruments inlcuding the Marimba (which is an African Xylophone) on Under My Thumb.  And like what George Harrison did for Norwegian Wood a year earlier for The Beatles, Jones lends a sitar sound to Paint It Black.  Incidentally, Jones learnt the sitar from Harrison.

The song however, originated when Wyman was playing an organ melody to make fun of former manager Eric Easton, who was also an organist.  Watts added a Middle-Eastern influenced drum line to the melody and it was this drum line that later became the basis of the song.

Richards takes on the guitar and backing vocals, while Jagger wrote the lyrics, which is reportedly about a man mourning his dead girlfriend but symbolically represents the mind's ability to paint everything black.  The bone-rattling bass line was overdubbed by Wyman with the bass pedals of a Hammond B3 organ.

Remember when Adam Sandler sang Grow Old With You on a plane with Billy Idol?  Or the Boy George wannabe who sings Do You Really Wanna Hurt Me on repeat?  That kind of collaboration of wedding singers may only remind you of laughs you shared with friends in the 90s, but there are other types of singers who collaborate for the sake of wedding-like festivity, and create an incredible fusion of music.
